Atlanta Botanical Gardens has developed a worldwide reputation for spectacular eco-sculptures especially in its Imaginary Worlds series. In 2019, the biggest display yet opened, with the theme of “Alice’s Wonderland.” Thirty-one new eco-sculptures large and small grace the property and this Imaginary Worlds Exposition again broke attendance records.
Shorter construction cycle, longer life-cycle - another hot-dip galvanizing winning advantage.
These eco-sculptures are built with a steel exoskeleton that creates the basic shape of the sculpture as well as providing the supports for the 110,000 flower pots that when grown provide the exterior appearance of the beautiful works of art. Thirty-eight different flower species create the mosaic of colors and textures that bring these sculptures to life.
From a 30 foot tall rabbit to a chess board complete with seventeen different chess pieces up to 12 feet tall it’s a feast for the eyes. Largely hidden from view are these steel exoskeletons primarily formed from hand bent rebar. The manufacturer of these exoskeletons, Acme Décor in Beloeil Canada, faced a challenge to insure the durability and economy of the structures as continuous watering systems would keep moist soil and water in nearly perpetual contact with the steel. Previous experience with paint had proved wholly unsatisfactory.
When they investigated hot-dip galvanizing, they knew they had found a solution. The extremely long life and ruggedness of the coating not only ensured durability for the initial exposition, but would make relocation in the future a damage free process. The very large kettle of the local galvanizer allowed for much bigger structures reducing manufacturing costs and simplified site installation with commensurate savings there as well. The high capacity galvanizing plants in the area also ensured far faster turnaround times than painting.
With the multifaceted protection of galvanized steel stopping rust for many decades into the future, and the high capacity plants insuring rapid processing during construction all parties involved benefit from the amazing value equation of hot-dip galvanizing!
