Lake Livingston is a water conservation and flood control dam. This project was undertaken to update the existing gates and control systems the City of Houston depends on for an uninterrupted supply of water. Hot-dip galvanized steel was used to coat contenary supports, which protect the gate systems from lighting strikes that can lead to gate failure. The Trinity River Authority specified galvanizing be utilized to provide low-maintenance corrosion protection from the moist riparian environment.
Quick turnaround was key, and the indoor galvanizing process provides speedy turnover thanks to the climate-controlled facilities.
Boyler Inc. has specified galvanized steel be used for many projects in the past, and galvanized steel had an appealing aesthetic that matched the existing structure. Quick turnaround was key, and the indoor galvanizing process provides speedy turnover thanks to the climate-controlled facilities. This project, comprised of more than 50 tons of galvanized steel supports, ladders, walkways, and access platforms, will be visible to the public via a public observation area below the dam.
It is difficult to service many parts of the dam due to accessibility issues, so the long-lasting maintenance-free nature of hot-dip galvanized is ideal to minimize access difficulties. Galvanized steel will provide years of protection from the mists and condensation of the river and exposure to the elements, keeping the lake providing a constant flow of water for the cities it services.
