The Residences at Liberty Center is one of the most visible building structures in downtown Arlington, Virginia. The building features a front façade design with stars to reflect the idea of freedom from the neighboring nations capital, Washington, D.C.
Atop the building, the rooftop façade is comprised of structural steel extending many feet away from the building that also contains a pool area to serve the condominiums recreational needs. Steel was also part of the trellises enclosing the roof-top space. Heller & Metzger Consulting Group, hired by the architects of the project, suggested to hot-dip galvanize the steel instead of paint to eliminate problems with repainting the façade due to its far proximity from the roof.
Half of the 120 tons of structural steel were hot-dip galvanized, including the trellis components and façade canopy for the rooftop, hand railings, and all tubular columns. The choice to use hot-dip galvanizing was not only an attractive option to reflect this structures uniqueness; it will also be durable and maintenance-free for many years to come.
