The New Orleans Botanical Garden is one of the few remaining examples of public garden design from the WPA and Art Deco Period. It has undergone dramatic improvements recently and has big plans for the future. One of the major improvements is a new Garden Entrance.
HDG steel was specified for the project for strength, durability and aesthetic appeal.
The Living Green Wall with over 3,500 individual plants growing together in a horticultural display. The Living Green Wall is the backdrop for an inviting black granite pool, The Magic Fountain, with jumping water and a disappearing edge. Both it and the Living Green Wall are lit with multi-colored LED lights that make a magnificent show for evening visitors.
HDG steel was specified for the project for strength, durability and aesthetic appeal. The 3500 plants are grown in flats placed horizontally on the wall and can be extremely heavy especially when wet. HDG steel protects the wall not only from the humid New Orleans atmosphere but from the drip irrigation system and the mist from the jumping water fountain. Project funding was by the City of New Orleans Capital Projects Administration and private donors.
As with any public project initial cost was important but future maintenance was considered, so HDG was the obvious choice for protecting this living monument for many decades to come. The Living Green Wall is surrounded by Oaks some of which are hundreds of years old. Each year, millions of visitors will stroll under the picturesque moss canopies that has served as backdrop for dances, concerts and even gentlemanly duels or affaires dhonneur. HDG will help keep these traditions for generations.
