The architect of this building in Pittsburgh specified galvanized steel partially because it is located on the south side of the steel town on the site of an old US Steel mill. However, the main reason galvanizing was chosen was for its durability. The building is a mixed-use structure including retail, office, and living space. The developer had previous experience with having to repaint steel every 3 to 4 years for rust prevention, and desired a more cost effective and low maintenance solution. Galvanized steel eliminated the time consuming, difficult, and expensive task of repainting the exterior steel. The buildings appearance pays tribute to the sites history of steel-making and the zinc coating will provide the owners with the cost effective corrosion protection they desired.
