The Sawgrass Expressway AET (Automatic Electric Tolling) Florida Turnpike Authority project, among many others, is the conversion of the Florida Turnpike Roads being changed from manned toll booths to full electronic tolling. Premier Fabricators built 2 EA 72 Accessible Gantrys for Sawgrass mainline and 17 EA tri-chord gantries for the on and off ramps along 15 miles of highway. In Florida, in the next few years, you will see all the toll booths disappear and galvanized tolling structures being installed on all major interstate roads and ramps.

The department chooses to go with galvanizing for several reasons.  The primary reason is the durability in the Florida Environment for steel.  Other reasons include: easy maintenance, long life of the steel and the fact that that the structure itself does not stand out and drivers can focus on the sign instead the structure.

The Sawgrass Expressway AET 5B was the first project to use the new design for the tolling gantry called the Accessible Gantry.  This design was done a few years back but had never been implemented until this project.  The reason for this design was 3 fold. First, is was a lower cost option compared to the Signature Gantry that was painted and not galvanized. Second, the maintenance on the Signature Gantry with the paint system in lieu of the galvanizing was a huge undertaking. Lastly, they wanted the structures to blend in with the standard FDOT tri-chord structures that are just galvanized so as not to distract the drivers.
