Montreal, as an island city of 3.5 million inhabitants faces unique transportation challenges between the island itself and the southern suburbs across the mighty Saint Lawrence River. These challenges are offset by the opportunities presented by the river shore for panoramic park space. The suburban communities of Boucherville and Longueil have miles of previously unused shoreline along the St. Lawrence shoreline that are now being made more accessible to its citizens.
The area in question is very narrow with a large multilane freeway built right to the edge of the river so a one and a quarter mile elevated pedestrian and cyclist pathway was required to link many miles of paths along the entire scenic shoreline.
The humid climate of Montreal and especially the proximity of a large freeway that is heavily salted five months a year made corrosion a prime concern and the recent collapse of an un-galvanized pedestrian overpass onto that same highway heightened corrosion concerns even more so.
Hot-Dip galvanizing was the logical choice with its low initial cost, locally proven long service life and almost zero maintenance requirements. Galvanized steel was used for the entire walkway deck itself as well as the expansion joints and many ancillary items such as lighting and railings etc.
Careful factory control of the dipping process ensures distortion free decking and the rugged strength of Hot-Dip coatings eliminated costly on-site touch-ups. The quick turnaround of the reliable high capacity galvanizer also insured that there were no delivery delays.
This link now permits citizens to enjoy following the shoreline of one of the worlds great rivers while taking in the striking views of the heart of Montreal right before their eyes for miles upon miles without interruption.
