This is not your ordinary fence. Although it is for security - it also has an artistic element.
The artwork incorporated into the fence panels depicts the heroes from the neighborhood that have celebrated success.
An upscale grocery store opened recently in a mostly low-income, African-American neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, IL. The store was built on the site of a former public housing project and it represents an acceleration of the transformation of the neighborhood. The Chicago residents know the location well. In the past, it was ravaged by gangs, drugs and violence and after the housing was torn down the land sat vacant. This new development has given the area hope.
On the store's exterior there was a galvanized fence constructed that includes giant photos of area legends, such as Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Muhammad Ali and dozens of others who are part of the rich history. The artwork incorporated into the fence panels depicts the heroes from the neighborhood that have celebrated success.
The fence project was not only designed for security and artistic purposes but for the grueling Chicago weather. Located just inland of Lake Michigan, the summer humidity and the harsh winters called for this project to be hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance.
