The 2.7 million square foot Newark Liberty International Airport Consolidated Rental Car ConRA Facility, designed by PGAL, includes 2,925 public parking spaces and 3,380 rental car spaces to support 10 rental car brands. The project also includes retail operations, vehicle fleet storage, and maintenance/fueling/wash bays.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey entered an agreement by ENGIE to install 4-Mega Watt rooftop solar canopy on the upper level of the 2.7 million square foot facility. Additionally, electric vehicle chargers have been installed for public parking and for the electric cars rentals in the near future.
“This facility will provide efficiency and convenience for all Newark Airport travelers, not just rental car customers,” says Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
The solar canopy is constructed from 2200 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel columns, steel tube arms and purlins. The heavy long purlins were designed to created longer spans to use little parking spaces as possible. The Solar Canopy covers the entire building holding up 8,888 individual solar panels connected to its own electric substation. The galvanizer was located so close to Newark Liberty International Airport and they turned around a trucks load of steel every day to the job site for a seamless installation for the general contractor.
