The Covid-19 Pandemic has created a new problem for New York City with the extreme surge of bike riding in the city. People are avoiding public transportation and are exercising using their personal bikes. The city only has 56,000 bike parking spaces with an estimate 1.6 million riders throughout the city. The NYC DOT have decided to install bike lanes and floating parking lane to free up crowded sidewalks by removing the existing bike racks on sidewalk and locating the new 3 corral racks along the bike lanes in the city’s streets. This will also benefit the pedestrians to free up much needed walking space on sidewalks.

Being such a high-profile job for the NYC DOT, every U-shaped tube corral had to be smoothed out by using hand files to be certain that’s there will be no excessive zinc build or sharp edges that the riders can cut their hand. Being only 140 lbs. at 9’ long the corrals had to racked and braced in the galvanizing kettle to ensure not warping or twisting the corral in the molten zinc. More than 500 corrals were fabricated, galvanized and installed throughout 2021 on this project.
