The Pittsburgh Bike Share Partnership sought to set up a bike share program for the City of Pittsburgh by utilizing a Federal Grant that would bring more than 500 bicycles to the city. Through a partnership with the German company Nextbike, the 500 bikes were peppered throughout 50 stations in Downtown, the North Side, South Side Flats, Oakland and the East End.
The German design for the station included the need for these stations to be hot-dip galvanized. In other cities, stations like these are often painted or powder coated. The City of Pittsburgh agreed with the initial design that they would need a coating that was more durable and would stand up to the test of time in the harsh urban environment of Pittsburgh.
The steel fabricator spent a significant amount of time consulting with the galvanizer to ensure the project coating system would meet the expectations of their customers. They knew the City and Nextbike would require design for optimum quality galvanizing that they were accustomed to seeing in their local projects in Germany. Ultimately, the consultations paid off and the hot-dip galvanized bike stations were a success.
