A hugely difficult environment for corrosion protection was the challenge; abrasion from loading and unloading combined with gravel roadways often treated with grit and corrosive chemicals to manage dust and ice.
These trailers have huge raw cut logs loaded roughly precluding the use of soft and expensive aluminum. This combined with flying gravel, de-icing sand and salt as well as chloride dust control chemicals make short work of even the best paint systems.
So the obvious solution was hot-dip galvanizing; excellent corrosion resistance combined with exceptional abrasion resistance and all at a lower cost than inferior solutions like paint or aluminum construction.
