Grantville Station is a highly visible and heavily trafficked trolley station in the Mission Valley area of San Diego. Exposed to the corrosive elements of the urban area (automotive/truck exhaust) and the salt air of the marine environment, the engineer selected a combination hot-dip galvanized and painted (duplex) system to protect the spiral stairs, shade canopies, and pedestrian restraints from corrosion.
The engineer selected a combination hot-dip galvanized and painted (duplex) system to protect the spiral stairs, shade canopies, and pedestrian restraints from corrosion.
The structural systems are constructed of pipe and tube brace frames and wide-flange moment frames. The complexity and size of these very large prefabricated sections required special venting and care during the galvanizing process, as well as during erection. With the long-term corrosion protection that the zinc coating provides to the duplex system, Grantville Station will remain an attractive showpiece for he city of San Diego and for the hot-dip galvanizing industry.
