"The Hiawatha Line is a 12-mile light rail corridor extending from downtown Minneapolis to the suburb of Bloomington, connecting the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport and the Mall of America. It carries 12% of the passengers of the entire Minneapolis Metro Transit System, making the corridor essential to meet the growing demand for public transportation in the Twin Cities area.
The Hiawatha Line takes hundreds of cars off the road each day, and will now additionally help the environment by using 100% recyclable HDG steel.
After previous paint systems failed to meet expectations, hot-dip galvanized (HDG) steel was chosen for the corridor expansion. The durable, metallurgically bonded zinc coating will protect the station from daily abrasion and exposure to the harsh Minnesota winters. To further protect the structure, a duplex system utilizing paint over HDG was implemented. The combined system means the time to first maintenance will be 1.5 to 2.5 times longer than the sum of the individual coatings.
This extended time to first maintenance means no wasted energy or harmful chemicals will be expended, enhancing the sustainable nature of the project.
