CloseThe longhorn steer head sculpture at historical Spring Creek Ranch is displayed at the main entrance gate of this seven generation family homestead. The 700 acre property has been a family working ranch since 1842. The Spring Creek Ranch is located at Oakwood, Texas on Highway 79 in Leon County.
The inside of the steer contains ranch heirlooms such as cowbells, fence stretchers, stirrups, spurs, horse bits, horn weights, and a family branding iron.
The design of this sculpture actually came from a picture on the ranch of a living 21 year old longhorn steer. The owner wanted to replicate a life-size time capsule to contain family heirlooms from the ranch. The sculpture has a 7 1/2' foot horn spread each made from 110' of hand-wrapped 1/4" rod. The skin contains over 200 horseshoes used on the ranch uniquely placed. The inside of the steer contains ranch heirlooms such as cowbells, fence stretchers, stirrups, spurs, horse bits, horn weights, and a family branding iron.
This project was very unique and important for the galvanizer. There were so many delicate and precious family pieces to incorporate correctly to meet the hot dip galvanizing process. As you can see from the pictures it turned out to be a show stopper. The owner adds that, "cars stop at our gate to take pictures continuously now." The historical family artifacts will be preserved at their original site for many years of family and friendly discussion.
