On June 11, 2008, Little Sioux Ranch in Iowa was struck by an EF-2 tornado during a Pahuk Pride National Youth Leadership Training. Four brave scouts lost their lives, while 48 others were injured in the devastating event.
A new set of five brightly galvanized flag poles now stand as a tribute to those affected that day; four poles are dedicated to the boys who lost their lives, while the fifth honors the injured. The rebuilding of Little Sioux Ranch is a testimony to the undying spirit of the Boy Scouts, and the galvanized steel flag poles represent the durability and longevity of their optimistic attitudes. Those who donated the flag poles considered that Little Sioux Ranch is a not-for-profit center and realized hot-dip galvanized steel was an appropriate corrosion protection system because it requires little to no maintenance and maintains an impressively low life cycle cost.
Because the flag poles are also a main focal point on the ranch, a smooth, attractive finish was required; the galvanized zinc coating delivered this finish. The Little Sioux Scout Ranch has been a model of resilience and perseverance, and it now boasts five proud flag poles symbolizing that dedication.
