Imperial Sugar Company is the largest refined sugar producer in the United States. The company produces approximately 33% of the market share of refined sugar through four cane sugar facilities in Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana as well as 11 beet sugar processing plants.
Due to hot-dip galvanizing's low life-cycle cost and durability... Imperial Sugar Company will be able to invest their efforts in continuing to produce high quality sugar products.
Imperial Sugar has been in operation for more than 175 years and recently underwent a major expansion to the refinery in Port Wentworth, GA. The large scale project included construction of large, specialized tanks and the structural steel to support them, along with other materials like handrail and ladders.
More than 500 tons of hot-dip galvanizing was specified for the new structural steel supports. The specialized tanks are critical to the refining process making it imperative to keep the supporting steel rust- and maintenance-free for decades.
Other portions of the plant were previously hot-dip galvanized, and thanks to HDG's maintenance free success on those structures, the owners decided to specify galvanizing again. Minimizing maintenance allows the plant to focus their time and money on their quality products. Due to hot-dip galvanized steel's low life-cycle cost and durability in this harsh industrial environment, Imperial Sugar Company will now be able to invest their effort in continuing to produce high quality sugar products.
