HK Leasing has been providing tractor trailers and accessories to Oklahoma and neighboring states for years. They offer flatbeds, refrigerated vans, dry vans, step decks and belly dumps. Additionally, they provide dump truck beds for multiple applications. Due to the nature of their extreme use, extending the lifespan of these beds has been a challenge for HK Leasing. The traditional paint protection has not held up well over the years. Dump truck beds are exposed to everything from soil to salt. Typically, rocks and other abrasive material peel the paint from the beds exposing the steel to corrosive elements resulting in costly maintenance and repairs.
Galvanizing was clearly the most robust coating to withstand abrasive concrete, rock, sand, soil and asphalt, while also providing protection against corrosive elements and salt loads.
Blu Haddock, the owner of HK Leasing and Firehouse Beds LLC wanted to fix that problem and provide a new and superior dump truck bed for Canadian County in Oklahoma. The county would need to use the dump truck bed to transport a variety of material to help maintain it’s 417 miles of roads. The very positive past experience Blu had with hot-dip galvanizing gave him no doubt that this would be the very best corrosion protection solution for this new dump truck bed. Galvanizing was clearly the most robust coating to withstand abrasive concrete, rock, sand, soil and asphalt, while also providing protection against corrosive elements and salt loads used as a deicer in winter.
The end result was a plate steel dump truck bed reinforced with tube and angle and equipped with rolling tarp cover. The bed was placed on a Western Star 4900 tractor capable of hauling 16 yards or 56,000 lbs of material. Detailed collaboration was required between the fabricator and galvanizer to ensure proper venting and drainage. This teamwork was a primary factor in creating a smooth quality finish for a dump truck bed with this size and design. After galvanizing, the bed was painted black to provide duplex protection and give the bed a traditional look. Undoubtedly, the new dump truck bed will service Canadian County for years to come thanks to the outstanding corrosion protection of hot-dip galvanizing. HK Leasing should definitely have a leg up on the competition with this new bed and it’s supreme corrosion protection.
