To take advantage of its parking lots, General Douglas MacArthur High School has launched a green energy project that will greatly reduce its energy costs. The project, better known as an Energy Performance Contract (EPC), calls for the construction of solar carports solar panels as well as lighting upgrades.
“This installation will showcase the district’s commitment to pioneering the use of renewable clean energy within the facility and set a lead example for other districts throughout Long Island.”
The solar canopies will be the most visible part of the upgrades. They will produce electricity for receiving a 575.25kW DC system that will partially offset General Douglas MacArthur High School’s electric bill. The school will also see interior and exterior lights replaced with state-of-the-art LED lights and fixtures that are significantly more efficient than the current lighting units that are in areas comprised of decades old technology.
General Douglas MacArthur High School is participating in an energy performance project that just installed three solar canopies throughout the school’s parking lot. With 400 solar modules and energy performance, the canopies are equipped with 2 charging stations for electric cars.
These solar canopies were constructed using approximately 45 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel columns and purlins. Heavy W27×68 columns, standing 15 feet tall, paired with purlins spanning 38 to 53 feet, were engineered to achieve longer clear spans while minimizing the number of parking spaces impacted by the installation.
The project required precise coordination and rapid turnaround, with each canopy section processed and delivered in truckload quantities every 24 to 48 hours. This just-in-time delivery approach supported a seamless and efficient installation sequence, ensuring the project remained on schedule while maintaining the long-term corrosion protection and structural performance provided by hot-dip galvanizing.
