For nearly five decades, the Hilliard Community Center has served as a gathering place for residents, evolving from a modest pole-barn structure with a bright-blue-floor gym into a valued community hub. As Hilliard’s population grew from 8,000 in 1997 to nearly 40,000 today, so did expectations for recreation and wellness space. After extensive community engagement-including surveys, focus groups, and public meetings- residents expressed a clear desire for a modern, multi-purpose facility.
In 2021, voters approved a new 110,000-square-foot complex featuring a gymnasium, indoor track, fitness and weight rooms, studios, classrooms, a 240-person event hall, commercial kitchen, child-watch area, outdoor patio, and an expansive aquatics center. A signature element is “The Well,” which dedicates nearly 25,000 square feet to an integrated health and wellness center operated by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The name reflects its purpose: a place for the community to gather
“The Well”- Exercise is Medicine.
From the outset of the $106 million Hilliard Recreation and Wellness Campus- aptly named “The Well”- the project team knew this community hub would require a steel package capable of meeting an aggressive schedule and performing reliably for generations. The fabricator partnered with the general contractor to supply and erect nearly 1,000 tons of structural steel for the expansive new campus. Of that total, more than 300 tons required hot-dip galvanizing followed by a paint system, creating a robust duplex coating designed to withstand decades of heavy use and Ohio weather.
Completing fabrication, galvanizing, and finishing within a tightly coordinated 12-month window demanded constant communication, sequencing, and teamwork. As each phase of the building rose from the ground, the fabricator carefully timed releases of steel so material could move seamlessly from the shop, through the galvanizing process, and onto the jobsite in alignment with the fast-paced erection schedule.
Hot-dip galvanizing played a critical role in the long-term performance plan for the recreation center. The project team selected HDG for its unmatched corrosion protection, metallurgically bonded zinc coating, and proven ability to safeguard steel in harsh Midwestern environments. The extended service life of galvanized steel also significantly reduces maintenance needs, creating a strong life-cycle cost advantage for a public facility that will see constant daily use.
Sustainability was another key factor. The 100% recyclable galvanizing coating, reduced need for future recoating, and long-term environmental resilience aligned directly with the city’s goal of building a durable, responsible, low-maintenance community asset.
Several structural elements added complexity to the process. The galvanizer worked closely with the fabricator to handle 33 oversized beams- some weighing up to 25,000 pounds and stretching to lengths of 69 feet. Through careful planning, specialized rigging, and coordinated dip procedures, each of these large members was successfully processed while maintaining coating quality and meeting the demanding schedule.
In the end, the project stands as a testament to what strong collaboration between the fabricator, galvanizer, and general contractor can achieve. The finished campus provides the City of Hilliard with a long-lasting, high-performance recreation facility that will serve the community for decades- truly a “Well done” achievement.
