There is no better corrosion protection choice for an earth-friendly, alternative energy project than 100% recyclable and sustainable hot-dip galvanized steel. Galvanizing the Florida Gulf Coast Solar Farm was the obvious choice for corrosion protection for a long list of reasons. The environmental elements in Tampa range from beating sun to heavy rain, not to mention the challenging, corrosive atmosphere of a salty coastal location. HDG sustainably stands up to all of these elements, and also has a low life cycle cost with little to no maintenance. A total of 338 tons of steel were galvanized for this project, including everything from the support system to brackets for panel rotation. Proper venting was very important in this project, as the insides of the galvanized tubes had to be clean to limit damage to the electrical cables that run throughout. The solar farm is very close to the entrance of the college, so an aesthetically pleasing finish was also achieved through the use of HDG steel. With the solar energy market beginning to blossom and a need for green solutions to our everyday problems, it is very likely this pairing of HDG and solar energy will become common place.
