The harsh climates in north central Pennsylvania make corrosion protection an absolute necessity. The Knouse Foods Solar Panels in Gettysburg, PA utilize hot-dip galvanized steel to protect the parts holding up the solar panels, including the stanchions, horizontal tubes, cantilever tubes, and adjusters, from the frigid winter conditions. Galvanizing provides a superior corrosion protection method because of the zincs cathodic bond to the steel. This project was the first of its size in Pennsylvania, making it a pioneer in the vast use of solar energy as a sustainable way of living. Galvanizing was chosen because of its quick turnaround time and the need for a clean, aesthetic appearance. Because, sustainability is an important aspect in the alternative energy market, galvanized steel is a great example of sustainable design since zinc is a naturally occurring element and is 100% recyclable at the end of its life-cycle. All of these benefits of galvanized steel will help the Knouse Foods Solar Panels stand strong for decades.
