The garages, pit areas, lighting, water pumps, and pretty much anything plugged in at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania receive energy produced by the tracks solar farm. This method of alternative energy is becoming quite popular as the demand for sustainable living grows. The 25 acre photovoltaic solar farm has almost 40,000 panels and will produce up to 4 million kilowatt hours annually. It will eliminate Poconos enormous electric bill, and reduce carbon emissions by about 2400 tons annually. The giant solar farm is located adjacent to the Super Speedway and can be seen from space.
Hot-dip galvanized steel was utilized on all substructure components supporting the solar panels, including wide flange posts, beam supports, and brackets. These components are expected to withstand the outdoor weather conditions beyond the life span of the solar farm due to galvanizings lasting corrosion protection. Additionally, since hot-dip galvanized steel is 100% recyclable, the coating is an added bonus to an already environmentally conscious business. Previous HDG usage in solar projects in Spain and Germany were proof enough to continue utilizing galvanized products in this project, ensuring that it will remain maintenance-free for many decades.
