The design features circular shapes reflecting the overall curvilinear lines seen in the overlooks, retaining walls, and pavement patterning throughout the plaza, while echoing the arc ways of the historical train depot itself. The circle and cross are one of the earliest symbols seen in human cultural development dating back to the Stone Age. Circles reference all that is natural such as the sun, moon, earth, cycles of time and re-occurrence.
The contrast of the silvery grey galvanizing and the very dark/black patina adds a distinct beauty and depth of this unique 3-D design.
The "X" reflects transit themes of crossing, intersecting, joining, and marking a point in time or space. The curvilinear sculptures tumble or roll across the abatement wall creating a sense of energy and motion, simulating transit vehicles such as bicycles, cars, trains but most importantly, the flow pattern of the currents of Goose Creek. The artistic concepts employed are elegant and contemporary, "of its time", keeping with the larger aesthetic for this entire project.
By choosing to hot-dip galvanize (HDG) this project, the artist made every effort to protect, both inside and out, her three-dimensional artwork for many years to come. The contrast of the silvery grey galvanizing and the very dark/black patina adds a distinct beauty and depth of this unique 3-D design. The use of HDG on this project is notable not only for its use in corrosion protection but to show that HDG can be used across many industries as something functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.
