During WWII, Henderson, Nevada, was the largest contributor of manufacturing and assembling titanium aircraft parts in the United States. As a reminder of the special contribution the city made to assist with the war effort, the state of Nevada wanted to celebrate Hendersons history by developing a mural representing an image of the titanium aircraft parts used on WWII airplanes. Located at the main intersection of I-215 and I-15 in Henderson, the mural and accompanying sun symbol were erected using formed steel pieces to replicate the look of titanium.
Citing HDG as a far more cost-effective option...
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) chose to utilize hot-dip galvanized steel to incorporated aircraft graphics and rivets representative of Henderson history. Citing HDG as a far more cost effective option over both paint and titanium, NDOT mentioned its durability and visual aesthetics as major factors in the choice to use the coated steel for the project. The ductility of the galvanized plate made it easy to form the piece, an abstract representation of the surrounding mountains. With specific design features, special care was required to avoid distortion and keep the material from being quenched.
All plate assemblies including the channels and bracing were hot-dip galvanized, as was the setting sun symbol located on the opposite side of the interchange. Lending itself to Hendersons contributions, and having maintenance free corrosion protection, the artistic mural will stand for generations to come thanks to HDG.
