This was the first "Soccer Specific" stadium in the United States. The Hunt Sports Group wanted the Architect to design this in the same model as the European Football (Soccer) stadiums.. That included the wide spread use of Galvanized Steel in Europe as compared to the USA at that time.
There was also the possibility that American Soccer may not be as successful as hoped and some cities would need to disband. This stadium was built to where it could be disassembled and moved to another location if popularity of soccer did not catch on like Europe. The game like the stadium has withstood the test of time.
In speaking to the General Manager and Marketing people of Maphre Stadium and the original Architect (now retired) Don Kruckenberg, "The success of the maintenance free structure definitely put galvanizing in their plans for the new Soccer venue being hoped for by the year 2020.
Mr. Kruckenberg offered that before he retired, the success of using the galvanized steel on this project led him to specifying other projects in Central Ohio.
