Stretching aside the runway, the Boise Airport Approach Light Bridge is an instrument landing system, or ILS, that helps guide pilots to within feet of the ground. This system, which upgraded the airports current system to the highest category, enables pilots to land at the airport in poor visibility.
Hot-dip galvanized steel will protect this structure from exposure to rain, snow, and other environmental moisture...
The supporting steel structure of the light bridge needed a corrosion protection system that would allow busy air traffic to continue running daily, uninterrupted. The new bridge technology was created to cut down on flight delays, and continuous maintenance delays run counter to this initiative. Unlike paint for corrosion protection, which would require routine maintenance and touch-ups, hot-dip galvanized steel will allow the structure to serve as a beacon to landing planes, uninterrupted, for generations without maintenance.
Turnaround time was critical for this project, as truss sections needed to be shipped from the galvanizer on a continuous basis to ensure the project would be completed on schedule, while also efficiently utilizing available contractor and crane hours.
To accommodate the large size of the triangular truss sections, the pieces were progressively dipped in to ensure complete coverage of the framework. Each truss segment was then shipped to job site and assembled to form the 1,100 foot raised lighting bridge. Three hundred tons of truss sections, support braces, plates, and handrail were galvanized.
Special emphasis was placed ensuring a quality coating, as the bridge can be viewed by thousands of landing passengers every day. The lighting bridge spans a water canal near the runway and also accommodates pedestrian access for maintenance and repair. Hot-dip galvanized steel will protect this structure from exposure to rain, snow, and other environmental moisture, keeping the lighting bridge shining brightly without interruption.
