The MBTA has had a long standing policy of providing initial quality to minimize future maintenance and obsolesence. Their familiarity with hot-dip galvanizing and galvanizer applied coatings, particularly in areas that could not easily be accessed, was a major factor in the decision to specify the process.
The columns and beams at the Assembly Square station are located in areas that would require station shut-down and costly remediation if refurbishment was to be required.
