Hot-dip galvanized steel was chosen as the time honored proven method of protecting and preserving the massive steel base, tree top ring, and crowning removable steel plate. Constant outdoor environmental exposure in the Midwest during the winter months of the year was the primary reason for choosing this type of corrosion protection. In addition, the silver/gray surface of the zinc compliments the glow from the decorative light stringers for the public to see up close and from a distance.
The fabricator created two giant steel rings and a removable plate to function as an underlying structural support for electrical lighting around the Aksarben Village Tower in Stinson Park. Two steel beams were formed into a 58 foot diameter structural ring around the base of the tower. Additionally, four beams were transformed into a 16 foot diameter ring at the top of the tower. Eighty-Four airline light cables (83 feet in length) were then strung between the top and bottom rings.
