The 1958 Championship Game Statue is the latest part of The ELEVEN, a walkable series of 11 pieces of world-class art throughout downtown Canton, Ohio celebrates the greatest moments in the first century of professional football.
The 1958 NFL game was played on December 28, 1958 at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York by Baltimore Colts and New York Giants. The history of the moment of the “Greatest Game Ever Played” is the comeback of the Baltimore Colts and Quarterback Johnny Unitas come back to beat the New York Giants in the first sudden death in NFL Championship Game.
Specifically, the statue pays tribute to Raymond Berry, a Baltimore Colts player who caught 12 passes and scored a touchdown in the historic championship game.
"Football unites people, football is about much more than a game," Goodell said. "Much more than a 1958 championship game. It's about people and communities, and there is no community that has given more to the NFL than this community right here in Canton, Ohio."-Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner
The statue is 32’ high and consist of 6 separate pieces designed to fit in the artists local galvanizing kettle. Each section was made specifically for the hot-dip galvanizing process. Keeping in mind the size, distortion potential, venting and draining all for an outstanding finish. Jack Howard-Potter was in contact with the galvanizer throughout the design and fabrication of each section. The galvanizer has been working with Jack Howard-Potter for years and he loves the look, durability and corrosion performance of hot-dip galvanizing. The strong relationship has allowed the artist to push the boundaries between art and the durable zinc coating process.
