Located on the longest street in the world and soaring to heights above all other buildings in the city, 1 Yonge Street Condos is a truly impressive landmark in the city of Toronto. Completed in 2022, the complex includes several high-rise towers with thousands of residential units and ample space for amenities. The incredible glass towers provide luxurious waterfront living in this highly coveted area.
The hot-dip galvanized finish complimented the aesthetics of the overall building with the smooth gray finish blending in nicely without distracting from the incredible surrounding views
Not only does the highest tower in the complex hold the record as the tallest building in Toronto, but it checks every box regarding aesthetics, durability, and corrosion protection. Although the views are stunning from every room in the buildings, the rooftop patio is breathtaking. With magnificent views of Lake Ontario and Toronto’s skyline, the rooftop was designed to exude simple elegance with clear, 360° sightlines.
The rooftop was designed to not only look incredible but to stand strong through generations of residents. The large glass wall panels are held together with structural steel columns and bracing and the hollow structural steel, angles, and plates of the roof support the curtain wall of the building, ensuring the top of the condo is safely secure. In addition to the structural connections, the exposed rooftop materials needed to withstand the environmental conditions in the region. The changing seasons and proximity to Lake Ontario creates a corrosive environment and a building of this caliber would never allow a rusty appearance. Hot-dip galvanizing was ultimately selected as the optimum solution.
In addition to the corrosion protection and durability hot-dip galvanized steel provides, the life-cycle cost and sustainability were important. Due to its long-life span, the complex will not need to close the rooftop for routine maintenance every 5-10 years. The hot-dip galvanized finish also complimented the aesthetics of the overall building with the smooth gray finish blending in nicely without distracting from the incredible surrounding views. Finally, during the construction phase, the customer required quick turnarounds at the galvanizing facility. Clear communication was vital for the galvanizer to meet the strict deadlines and to ensure a quality product was produced prior to installation among the clouds.
As time goes on, awareness of this beautiful rooftop will spread in the city, and many will be yearning to enjoy the views of downtown that it provides. Standing strong into the future, the decision to hot-dip galvanize the steel components will only benefit the project for many years down the road.
