Five hundred feet in the air above the clouds a new section of tower has been erected to keep WLRQ-FM on the airwaves in Rockledge, Florida. The WLRQ-FM tower was originally built when the station went on air in 1982. Due to extreme corrosion caused by 42 years of constant exposure to the harsh coastal salt air environment, the top 20’ of the tower needed to be replaced. A hot dip galvanized tower section was selected to replace the original corroded top section and was painted aviation orange to comply with FAA regulations.
Communication towers are galvanized to protect the steel from corrosion and rust, extending the life of the structure- especially since these towers are exposed to harsh outdoor environments year-round. In this case, galvanizing is extremely important due to this tower being located on the coast in a salt air environment.”
Project scheduling was critical, as the broadcast tower needed to be returned to service with minimal downtime. Close coordination between the tower fabricator and the galvanizer ensured the replacement section was processed, coated, and released on an accelerated schedule to meet WLRQ-FM’s operational requirements. The galvanized tower section was turned around quickly, allowing time for painting and just-in-time delivery to Florida, where the erection crew seamlessly removed the existing section and installed the new one. The resulting galvanized coating system provides a significantly more durable, long-term corrosion solution, delivering enhanced protection against Florida’s salt-laden coastal environment and extending the service life of the tower.
