Lake Whitney is a flood control reservoir on the main stem of the Brazos River that runs through the heart of Texas. The US Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Brazos River in 1951 creating Lake Whitney. This lake covers 23,500 acres and 225 miles of shoreline and holds over 2 million acre-feet of water at flood level. It protects Waco and other communities further downstream from flooding. Whitney was one of the earliest recreational lakes built near the Dallas/Fort Worth area; completed in April 1951 as part of the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation Program.

Even though Lake Whitney is a freshwater lake there is a corrosive level of salt. This makes it necessary to hot-dip galvanize the marina for a long service life. There are nearly 200 boat slips along with a floating store and fuel station. Whitney Ridge has become the finest resort & marina in Texas.

Lake Whitney is a year-round destination for Texas residents due to the abundance of water sports including fishing, boating, sailing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, and water skiing. Whitney Ridge Marina and RV Resort opened its doors March 1, 2023. Gary McDowell owner and managing partner of Whitney Ridge noticed that the pandemic caused a rise in public interest in outdoor activities and boat purchases. Whitney Ridge Marina currently offers 200 boat slips along with boat services and boat sales. Due to the lake’s slight salinity and the constant exposure to splashing from waves on the lake, galvanized steel was the obvious material of choice due to its corrosion resistant nature. Transforming what once was “Uncle Gus’ Marina into a state-of-the-art facility will provide recreational opportunities for years to come due to the long service life of galvanized steel.
