The West Saratoga Transportation Hub is a new bus station designed to house over 100 school buses for the Alpine School district in Saratoga Springs, Utah. The station was developed to serve the booming area of Lehi, Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain.
It is estimated this station would save the district $450,000 a year on fuel costs.
A series of 4 rectangular parking canopies equipped with outdoor lighting were constructed for the project. The 12 acre station is located within a residential neighborhood and next to Westlake High School. Concealment and visual aesthetics was a mandatory element of the work. Hot-dip galvanizing the steel structural members was certain to ensure the structure would be free of unsightly corrosion as the members are exposed to air and moisture. 187 tons of heavy tube columns and I beam girders make up the bulk of the galvanized structure.
A unique aspect of the structure is the design of the roof. It is sloped inward to allow for optimal rainwater gathering and gutters funnel water into large downspouts located in the center of the canopies. A complimentary concrete wall was constructed around the perimeter of the site to conceal the buses inside as they sit parked in storage. Future expansion of this project will consist of constructing a natural gas filling station for the buses and general public use. According to the school district, anyone with a natural gas vehicle would be able to fill up at the station. It is estimated this station would save the district $450,000 a year on fuel costs. Hot-dip galvanizing makes certain the parking structure and future natural gas filling station will serve the public well and provide lasting and sustainable corrosion protection for years to come.
