Wells Enterprises, Inc. has started a four-phase plan to construct a 350,000-square-foot facility with 11 production lines for its various ice cream products. Wells manufactures four brands of ice cream products, including Blue Bunny, Blue Ribbon Classics, Halo Top, and the original Bomb Pop. A new facility will not only enhance the production of those brands, but it will also allow for unforeseen industry innovation. Wells Enterprises, Inc., has invested nearly $170 million in an expansion of its facilities in the city of Dunkirk, which will total $450 million upon completion. Wells was acquired by Ferrero of Italy in 2022. This project was planned prior to the acquisition and remained necessary for the future of the site. Some of the products already launched at other production sites that will be produced in Dunkirk include Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, and 100 Grand ice cream bars.
“I’m excited for the people to go from what they had to what they will have. It’s just amazing to me. I’m so proud that they are going to be able to experience that,” David Fiore, Director of Operations, Dunkirk Plant said.
Phase one included adding a room full of tanks which will store chocolate to be infused with various ice cream and frozen dairy products. In addition to the tanks, an enormous freezer was added to freeze the product before it sent across the street for distribution. The monstrous freezer requires a monstrous HVAC system. The 135-ton platform supports the various components needed to achieve this level of chill. Galvanized steel was chosen for its ability to last for generations and withstand the harsh upstate-NY weather conditions.
