In April 2017, the University of Georgia began a West End Zone enhancement project. A portion of this project included expanding their existing scoreboard in the West End Zone from 75’ x 46’ to the new mammoth 100’ x 52', so fans could better see and experience the hard-hitting defense, explosive offense, and all the excitement of a Georgia Bulldog Saturday.
The project, with large and heavy components, took careful planning and working with the galvanizer in pre-planning meetings to ensure the columns and catwalks could be processed.
When all the key project members were deciding on the coating protection for this project, hot-dip galvanizing was chosen and specified for this scoreboard. The ease of specifying, coating durability, corrosion performance, and year round exposure to the elements made HDG a natural choice. The sustainability and longevity of the galvanized coating life was also a deciding factor. The project, with large and heavy components, took careful planning and working with the galvanizer in pre-planning meetings to ensure the columns and catwalks could be processed.
With this project having to be complete before the 2018 season kickoff, several factors were vital to making this project successful. One of the largest concerns for the columns were if they could be fabricated and galvanized in one piece. The turnaround time and handling of these columns was a large question mark at the beginning of the project. Once the galvanizer and fabricator met together to determine it was possible, the project moved forward without a hitch. The galvanizer was able not only to provide the turn time to keep the project on track, but also able to galvanize the columns in one piece without having to splice the material in many additional pieces.
The successful project was due to the diligent planning and hard work from all the key project members. The University of Georgia and the city of Athens will have a scoreboard to be proud of for fans, visitors, and the Georgia Bulldog nation for many games and years to come. GO DAWGS!!!
