In the lower Saint Lawrence River valley where the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec meet the state of Maine is a lovely deep-water lake called Temiscouata, loved by trout anglers everywhere. For those of you who do not want to spend the day fishing, the local town (Temiscouata sur le Lac) is quite proud of a new addition to its community center that might be of interest you. A 75-foot-tall observation tower overlooking both the village and lake set on the top of the palisades that marked the post glacial waterline.
Just beyond the northeastern extreme of the United States is a very small, galvanized observation tower that is a very big deal for the inhabitants of a very small town thanks to the amazing power of the long-life yet low-cost of hot-dip galvanizing!
Given that the population of their town is only 5,000 residents, the town elders wanted this lookout to benefit both locals and visitors alike, but budget was paramount. It quickly became evident that steel construction was an unbeatable value and that hot-dip galvanized protection for the steel offered vastly longer service life at a cost lower than most paint systems.
Equally appealing was the speed at which the steel could be designed, fabricated, hot-dip galvanized and erected. No other construction solution could match the time and cost performance of HDG steel. Careful fabrication, high-quality galvanizing, and direct shipment of carefully identified bundles from the galvanizer insured minimum transport cost and exceptionally quick erection on site.
While not a large project for the steel or galvanizing industry it has quickly become a favorite venue among locals to watch the sunrise over their own hometown and lake. For many this is the first time they have been able to see their hometown all at once. Thanks to the long-proven durability of HDG, chances are several generations to come will be able to enjoy that same hometown view before this galvanized steel structure even needs its first major maintenance.
