The Starboard, located in Dewey Beach, DE is a focal point of one of Delaware’s most popular beaches. Located just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, this restaurant and bar attracts people from hundreds of miles away.
Since the Starboard is located between two other beach towns, many guests arrive on foot or by bicycle. There have been bike racks designed to duplicate the iconic shark logo of The Starboard for many years. When these racks were installed years ago, the only protective coating on them was powder coating. Eventually the coastal elements, as well as the wear and tear of people locking their bikes to them, broke down that coating and they began to rust.
"Restaurant ownership preferred the spangle aesthetics of hot-dip galvanizing"
Luckily, restaurant ownership was made aware they can still get these back racks galvanized to prevent corrosion from taking over again so quickly. These racks were sent to the galvanizer to have the remaining powder coating stripped, and then galvanized before being reinstalled. Some of the bike racks were powder coated over galvanizing for a duplex effect, the remainder of them were not, as restaurant ownership preferred the spangle aesthetics of hot-dip galvanizing. Hot-dip galvanizing was an easy choice to protect these sharks so that they could continue to stand guard over the local bicycle fleet for years to come!
