Large-scale solar projects demand equipment that can perform reliably in harsh, remote environments while supporting fast-paced installation schedules. The Solar Reel Trailer was developed to support utility-scale solar construction by safely transporting and deploying large reels of electrical cable across expansive project sites. Designed for rugged field conditions and repeated use, the trailer plays a critical role in maintaining efficiency during cable installation operations. Hot-dip galvanizing was selected to protect the steel structure from corrosion, ensuring long-term durability, minimal maintenance, and dependable performance throughout years of service in demanding outdoor environments common to solar energy development.
“Reliable equipment for renewable energy- built to last.”
The Solar Reel Trailer features a robust steel frame engineered to carry multiple large cable reels simultaneously, enabling efficient transport, staging, and controlled deployment of electrical cable across utility-scale solar project sites. The trailer is routinely exposed to abrasive soil, moisture, UV radiation, and heavy handling from construction equipment during loading, transport, and operation. Given the trailer’s overall size- which approached the dimensional limits of the galvanizing kettle- coupled with the use of tubular steel, early and frequent communication between the fabricator and the galvanizer was essential to the project’s success. Prior to fabrication, multiple in-person meetings and site visits were conducted by both the sales and operations teams to review design details, dimension, venting and draining requirements, and lifting points. This collaborative planning ensured the structure was optimized for the hot-dip galvanizing process while maintaining the trailer’s structural integrity and functional requirements. Once finalized, all structural components were hot-dip galvanized through complete immersion in molten zinc, providing uniform protection to exterior surfaces and interior of tubular members- areas that are difficult, or impossible, to coat using alternative methods. The resulting galvanized finish delivers exceptional resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and mechanical damage, eliminating the need for ongoing coating maintenance and extending the service life of the trailer. Through proactive coordination and thoughtful design integration, the Solar Reel Trailer demonstrates how early collaboration and hot-dip galvanizing work together to support durable, reliable equipment for the demanding conditions of solar energy construction.
