Higher and longer than all 17 Ashtabula County covered bridges, the Smolen-Gulf Bridge stands proudly over the Ashtabula River. Ashtabula County has a long history of using galvanized steel in its building projects, because of the aesthetics and low initial and life-cycle costs of hot-dip galvanizing (HDG). Galvanizing the Smolen-Gulf Bridge ensured that steel corrosion would not stain the wooden structure or concrete piers. This ensures a very positive and natural look. Keeping the HDG steel muted helps ensure the beauty of the laminated wooden structure is not overpowered.
Galvanized components of the bridge include pier rebar, threaded rods, receiver plates, and guardrail. While these components of the bridge are essential to structural integrity, they are almost completely hidden in the design. Not only can HDG be a bold, very visible protective coating, it can be a behind the scenes protector as well. Thanks to the unseen strength of HDG, the Smolen-Gulf Bridge will remain bold and visible.
