Previously configured as a dually pickup, I set out to design and build a new flatbed body for my Ford F-650 with improved utility, storage, and corrosion protection. I settled on a 102 inch wide skirted body with an Apitong hardwood deck, recessed gooseneck hitch, integrated toolboxes, and a dovetailed rear profile to ensure ample clearance for the underbody towing apparatus.
I value the thorough corrosion protection provided by the hot-dip galvanizing process - the zinc is able to flow into forms where it would be impossible to paint or powdercoat, and the cost of HDG is unbeatable for the durability and protection provided.
I value the thorough corrosion protection provided by the hot-dip galvanizing process - the zinc is able to flow into forms where it would be impossible to paint or powdercoat, and the cost of HDG is unbeatable for the durability and protection provided. Throughout the entire design and fabrication process, I focused on incorporating adequate drainage and venting into my structures, and designed them in a way that would minimizing the chances of warpage. Primarily, I accomplished this by utilizing nearly uniform material thicknesses throughout the entire structure, and by designing the body in separate elements that would be assembled after the hot-dip galvanizing process had been completed. Everything went as planned; there was no warpage, despite using relatively light material (12 and 10 gauge hot-rolled steel.) This project was completed with very little CAD drafting (only enough to plasma- and laser-cut the taillight openings and rear window guard, respectively) and no 3D modeling. It proved to be a strenuous mental exercise at times.
