On Canada’s rugged northern shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence sits the Port of Sept-Îles—North America’s largest raw-minerals port. Moving more than 200,000,000 tons annually, it is a backbone of the Northern Québec economy. In a place where steel meets saltwater and ice, the port needed corrosion protection it could trust.
In Northern Québec, longevity is sustainability and hot-dip galvanizing delivers both.
This deep natural harbor ships the region’s mineral wealth to global markets and brings in the fuel, equipment, and supplies that keep the mines, railways, and communities running.
At Pointe-Noire (Black Point), one terminal plays an essential role: receiving petroleum products for railways, mines, and regional energy needs. Its principal pier stretches 1,600 feet, and its concrete structure is vulnerable to impact from docked vessels. To hold ships at a safe, controlled distance, the terminal relies on swing-away Pier Defenders – built to absorb contact without yielding.
Seawater, de-icing operations for more than half the year, and abrasion and impact are constant. The remote location also increases the challenge as replacement parts are hundreds of miles away. Fit, finish, and unmistakable identification had to be right the first time.
The Pier Defenders had to be built right, built fast, and installed seamlessly. Hot-dip galvanized steel delivered the answer: the strength and economy of steel, protected by a zinc coating engineered for brutal exposure. Hot-dip galvanizing provides legendary durability, better abrasion resistance than the steel itself, and the almost miraculous “self-healing” properties. With modern, state-of-the-art automated galvanizing lines, the project also gained consistent quality and reliable product tracking – performance and control that can compete on cost with less durable alternatives.
With galvanized Pier Defenders in place, Sept-Îles can protect its pier quickly and keep it protected through years of salt, ice, and impact. In Northern Québec, where distance magnifies every repair, hot-dip galvanized steel delivers what infrastructure demands most: long-term performance, clear accountability, and lasting value.
