Having the oldest amusement park in Ocean City, NJ, Playlands Castaway Cove has been providing family entertainment for over 50 years. The owner, Scott Simpson, first contacted the galvanizer in the early spring of 2012. As he was preparing for the new season, he began to disassemble the ferris wheel for its routine maintenance which included a new coat of paint. Scott was very aware of the benefits of galvanized steel, especially in the boardwalk environment. However, he was unsure if he had enough time to remove the old paint and have the ferris wheel galvanized and assembled before the start of the new summer season.
The galvanizing staff visited the site and explained in detail what would be required to remove the paint and properly add venting to drain the structure for galvanizing. They then expedited each phase of the work, allowing the ferris wheel to be reassembled in a timely manner.
Playlands staff was confident the ferris wheel, once galvanized, would require less maintenance for the ensuing years. The ferris wheel stands as a landmark for the Ocean City Boardwalk and should remain corrosion free for decades, thanks to the benefits of hot-dip galvanizing.
