The balcony handrails are on the exterior of the building, exposed to the elements of Lake Superior. Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for this project because it provided the best value to the end-user who was installing the product at a high-end motel property.
They wanted a coating that was durable and had a long life-span with little to no maintenance. The fabricator preferred galvanizing to painting because of its reliability and quick turnaround. The galvanizing finish goes well with the urban style desired for this project. Additionally, hot-dip galvanized steel is more rigid, durable and more economical than aluminum or painted steel. Hot-dip galvanizing was selected by the owner, based upon past experience with having exterior architectural elements galvanized. Another reason was the life-cycle cost. The owner, did not want added cost of maintenance on the balconies over the years.
