In 1963, the original tram supports were galvanized and have been in service since without the need for maintenance. The Tramway, however, did need some changes: new cables, a new drive system, rock removal and new cabins. For all of these renovations, all fasteners, structural and misc. materials were hot-dip galvanized, totaling 400 tons (363 tonnes). The reason hot-dip galvanizing was chosen was the actual service-life of the old structure. The steel will be exposed to desert climates as well as snowy, mountainous terrain.
