The new residence halls completed for MIT have two interior courtyards secured by a series of four separate welded steel gates. Designed to be secure yet visually open while providing convenient entry and exit to the courtyards, all tube steel frames and elements as well as the expanded wire mesh infills of the gates were hot-dip galvanized ensure a long, maintenance-free life. The client instructed the facility be designed with a minimum 50-year life span, and with hot-dip galvanized steel, the gate should remain corrosion free for the life of the project.
