Metafork in the road is a whimsical 30-foot tall and 4,500 lbs. steel installation representing the classic metaphor for a deciding moment in life when a choice between presented options is required.
"I love the inverse poetry of making metaphors literal. There is a giant 30ft (literal) fork in the road outside the Auto Pilot office in Palo Alto" Elon Musk
Hot-dip galvanizing was specified for the very corrosive environment for this piece of artwork. The fork was initially displayed in the desert of Nevada for 9 days during the Burning Man festival in 2022. In this environment there are sever winds and sandstorms that could potentially destroy most other finishes.
After the Burning Man festival, the artwork was taken down and moved to the Telsa Bay Area Autopilot office in Palo Alto, CA.
Being in an area that is between the bay and the ocean, hot-dip galvanizing was as chosen for the long-term protection in this high humidity area of salt infused air. By choosing hot-dip galvanized steel, the customer is expecting to have a very low cost and maintenance free sculpture on display for many years to come.
