The 100-acre Lauritzen Gardens is home of two of the largest Union Pacific locomotives ever built. The Centennial No. 6900, the largest/most powerful diesel-electric locomotive and the largest steam locomotive, and the Big Boy No. 4023 were relocated to the park following Omahas downtown revitalization program.
All materials were hot-dip galvanized to provide the type of long-term coverage and protection desired
Situated atop a hill overlooking the Missouri River, the park is highly visible to the vehicles entering Omaha from Iowa, as well as visitors to the park. With the harsh winters in the Midwest high plains, the architect and fabricator of the project would only accept a highly galvanized product for its finish on the nearly 2 plus miles of steel surrounding the park. S&W Fence, a long time believer in galvanizing their projects for corrosion protection, surrounded the garden areas, stairs, walkways and locomotives with HDG steel to extend the life of the fence and handrails. All materials were hot-dip galvanized to provide the type of long-term coverage and protection desired to keep the Kenefick Park project in excellent condition and lower maintenance costs related to refinishing its surface.
