The wind monitoring crib station is located three miles off the shore of Cleveland, Ohio on Lake Erie. Lake Erie encounters some of the worst weather of all the Great Lakes. Because of the extremely harsh environment, the pole was hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection. Not only will the galvanized steel help protect the pole from the environment, but the coating will also help avoid difficult maintenance due to the location of the pole. The 125 foot pole holds a number of wind monitoring devices, and if the wind potential is promising, the City of Cleveland intends to construct a wind turbine to provide a reliable energy source for the city on the lake.
