In the aftermath of the August 2023 wildfires in Maui, which displaced nearly 12,000 residents and destroyed over 2,200 structures, the Ka La‘i Ola project provides essential temporary housing for affected families. The Ka La‘i Ola project offers studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom modular homes, each equipped with full kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas to support independent living. These homes are more than just shelter—they are spaces for healing and recovery.
Ka La‘i Ola embodies resilience and innovation — providing spaces for healing, where galvanized strength supports a community rebuilding together.
A key element of the project is the Ground Frame foundation system by Pin Foundations. These frames, made of galvanized steel, offer exceptional durability and corrosion resistance, ensuring a lifespan of over 75 years without the need for maintenance. The hot-dip galvanizing process creates a robust corrosive barrier that withstands Maui's coastal environment, including exposure to moisture, salt air, and fluctuating weather conditions. This protective layer not only extends the life of the frames but also makes them ideal for outdoor applications where long-term performance and reliability are essential.
The galvanizer for this project contributed to its success by galvanizing 178,470 lbs of steel from the start of the project in May 2024 to the completion of Phase 1 in December 2024. Their expertise and precision ensured that the galvanized frames met the highest standards of quality and durability, supporting the resilience of the Ka La‘i Ola project.
Additionally, galvanized steel contributes to sustainability by reducing the need for replacement and maintenance, thereby minimizing resource consumption and waste over time. The design of these frames further supports environmental stewardship by limiting site disturbance, preserving Maui’s natural landscape and heritage.
The completion of 280 modular units in the first phase marks a significant step in Maui’s recovery. Families now have safe, supportive homes, made possible by the joint efforts of builders, state agencies, and foundation experts. Ka La‘i Ola reflects practical innovation and teamwork in disaster recovery. It demonstrates what can be accomplished with creativity, care, and technical skill, offering a model for resilient housing solutions worldwide.
